Last week we had a bobcat come in and scrap away the old yard.

Crusher dust was brought in to make the new drive round driveway.

Topsoil was brought in for the new garden beds.

Native plants were purchased and an irrigation dripper system fitted.

Ten (10) solar lights were fitted along the line separating the drive round driveway and the garden area.

A number of ceramic ornaments made by my wife have been placed in the garden area.

This was all done whilst I was in Adelaide working – seeing it all finished in a week was a very big surprise!

This is our 12 of 12 for February 2009. The 12th of February was a Thursday. I forgot to take my camera to work so all of my 12 of 12 photos were taken after work.

Having taken a photo of the petrol station price board in January, it will be interesting to compare on a month to month basis the price of fuel over the year.

Compared to January ULP increased 28.4c/ltr and LPG increased by 18.4c/ltr.

This is our 12 of 12 for January 2009. The 12th of January was a Monday. Each Monday I commute from Berri to Adelaide to my work. This day was a very typical Monday work day. I took most of my 12 of 12 photos after work.

As we would like to stay overnight in National Parks and/or bush camp we decided to fit a 12 volt battery and have access to some 240 volt appliances (TV, Satellite TV Decoder, Laptop, Battery Chargers, etc.) that are in the caravan.

The campout is the longest running hot rod event in South Australia, according to organiser Denis Oates. A “Show and Shine” was conducted today outside the Renmark Hotel.

Tow Rig Drama

At the end of August we upgraded our tow rig from a petrol driven Jackaroo (1994) to a diesel driven Jackaroo (1999). Having obtained a Vehicle Inspection Report which advised that the “vehicle appears to be in good condition for its age”, we proceeded to purchase the vehicle.

Since purchasing the vehicle we have spent in excess of $5,000 repairing the vehicle – obviously appearances can be deceiving! Repairs included replacing the alternator, replacing the turbo charger, replacing an oil pressure switch, replacing the fuel injectors, replacing the head gasket and numerous other relatively minor parts.

We received the call Thursday afternoon that the vehicle was ready to collect and drove to Adelaide to pick up the vehicle. Starting the vehicle was still very difficult and it was recommended not to drive back to Berri. The following morning we were advised that the vehicle was ready, to again be told when we had almost reached the dealership that there were more problems.

As we had planned our weekend escape we turned around and proceeded to drive back to Berri and use our Magna as the tow vehicle for our weekend escape.

Day 1 – Friday (26 October 2007)

Arriving back in Berri at approximately 2.00pm, we proceeded to hitch the caravan up. Whilst we had a towbar tongue it was not suitable for us to use the WDH and the anti-sway bar. We decided to continue as Moorook was only 30 kilometres away and we could travel at 60kph to limit sway.

We finally arrived at the Moorook Camping Area and paid our site fees ($10/day for a powered site) and set up the caravan and the annexe.

Day 2 – Saturday (27 October 2007)

Today was forecasted to be hot and windy with the temperature expected to reach 35 degrees. The forecasters were correct and throughout the day it became more and more windy. We walked around the Camping Area and generally relaxed throughout the day.

We invited some friends over and proceeded to have a BBQ. As we finished our BBQ the winds increased, dust was blowing in, and it just became to uncomfortable to sit outside. We packed and secured as much as we could and went to bed to ride out the storm. We were woken a number of times during the night by the wind and rain, but fortunately had no dramas.

Day 3 – Sunday (28 October 2007)

This morning was very calm after the storms from the night before and provided a good opportunity to take some photos before we packed up and returned home. We inspected the annexe and a it was dry we were able to pack it away. We left the Moorook Camping Area by 11.00am and arrived back home by 11.45am.

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend escape and hope to experience more escapes in camping areas and national parks now that we are having a 100 amp hour battery fitted to the caravan.

Initially, I thought I’d leave details of any trips made without the caravan of this website, but having had second thoughts, I will now include trips made without the caravan.

On this ocassion, Diane went to visit her friend in Darwin for a week in June 2007.

This Easter we had family from Adelaide come up and visit us. We then took them around the tourist sites in the Riverland.

On Friday we drove to Renmark (20kms approx) and enjoyed a short walk along the riverbank. I took some photos of the ducks and a pelican. After this we crossed the Paringa Bridge and visited Lock 5 before returning to Berri.

Saturday was a quiet day with a BBQ in the afternoon with some of our friends.

IMG_0580a.jpgSunday morning we drove to Loxton (25kms approx) and had a look at “The Tree of Knowledge” where the flood levels have been reported. I can’t comprehend just how much water must have been around looking at the 1956 plaque. As we drove further down the track we were surprised by just how many people were camping on the riverbank.

We then took a leisurely drive to Kingston-on-Murray and I took some photos from the Kingston-on-Murray lookout before driving through Barmera on our way back to Berri.

Early on Monday our family left to return to Adelaide hoping to avoid the rush later on in the day.

The images were then spliced together to form one larger panoramic image.

Two Rivers

This is a photo-stitched image of the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers at Wentworth. Click on the image to view an enlarged image.

Perry Sandhills

The Perry Sandhills originated after an ice age (40,000 years ago) and are formed by wind erosion over thousands of years. Skeleton remains of giant mega-fauna (kangaroos, lions, emus and wombats) have been found there. Replicas of these animals are now on show at the Pioneer Museum in Wentworth.

Aboriginal tribes used this area to camp and hunt. Evidence of this is still being uncovered as the sands drift.

The sandhills were used as a bombing range during WWII. Now, the area is utilised as backdrop for many films, T.V. shows and ads, theatre/music presentations and as a perfect spot for a family “fun” outing.
