Due to numerous mechanical problems with our 1999 diesel Holden Jackaroo we finally had to bite the bullet and trade it in at a significant loss.

We looked around a few yards and finally bought a duel fuel Mitsubishi Pajero. We had the vehicle mechanically checked over and after a clean bill of health drove of with our new tow rig.

Highway Driving

Driving on LPG we used 16.17 litres per 100 kilometres, this equates to 6.18kms per litre.

Highway Towing

Driving on LPG we used 19.54 litres per 100 kilometres, this equates to 5.11kms per litre.

City Driving

Driving on ULP we used 17.10 litres per 100 kilometres, this equates to 5.84kms per litre.

So far, we haven’t done any towing whilst driving on ULP.

UHF & CD/Tuner Fitted into Jackaroo

We have now installed the Uniden UHF radio and Pioneer CD/Tuner into the Jackaroo.

As with any installation there were a few problems which needed to be sorted out.

The most serious was to locate the Pioneer CD/Tuner so that the fold down front could be folded down to enable the CD to be inserted. Unfortunately the front can only drop down about 80 degrees before the volume knob hits the console. This fortunately still provides sufficient room to insert and eject the CD.

Whilst we know that we could tow our caravan with our Magna, we were concerned with the strain that was being put on the Magna, when towing between 80kph and 90kph. The Magna is being driven in excess of 35,000kms per year for Gary to commute to and from work. We therefore decided to purchase a dedicated tow vehicle.

The Jackaroo is an XS model which is the mid range model. It is an automatic and has a cruise control which will hopefully assist somewhat with maintaining a reasonable fuel consumption. We picked up the Jackaroo Friday afternoon and took it for a drive to and from Adelaide on Saturday, travelling around 500kms all up.

The Jackaroo (whilst not towing the caravan) is currently returning 6.8kms per litre or 14.72 litres per 100kms. After we have done our first trip towing the caravan we will post updated fuel consumption figures whilst towing the caravan.

Our Tow Vehicle

Our towing vehicle is a 1997 TE Magna Executive. Without towing we were getting close to 500 kilometres highway driving on a full tank of LPG (approximately 65 litres). Towing the caravan we are getting around 300 kilometres per tank.
